Who needs a flu shot, how many doses, and when you can walk in for one at Uptown Pediatrics on the Upper East Side, including flu shots for parents.
By the Uptown Pediatrics team · · 4 min read

Flu vaccines have arrived at Uptown Pediatrics. We recommend a flu shot every year for all children 6 months and older, and this year we're again offering flu shots to parents alongside their kids.
Who should get a flu shot?
Everyone 6 months and older. The flu can be serious for young children, especially those under 5 and kids with asthma, diabetes, or other chronic conditions. Getting vaccinated also helps protect babies too young for the vaccine, grandparents, and classmates.
How many doses does my child need?
- First flu shot ever? Children getting the flu vaccine for the very first time need two doses, spaced one month apart.
- Everyone else needs just one dose each year.
If your child needs two doses, start early so they're fully protected before flu season peaks.
When can we come in?
- Weekdays: Monday – Friday, 9 am – 4 pm
- Saturdays: October 10 – November 21, 10 am – 2 pm
Parents, too!
We know parents often take better care of their kids than themselves, and we want you to stay healthy too. Plus, kids often feel braver when mom or dad goes first.
A note on insurance: Not all plans cover flu vaccines outside of your own primary care provider's office. If you have Healthfirst or a gated insurance plan, please confirm your coverage allows you to get the flu vaccine in our office.
Tips for a smoother shot
- Talk about it honestly ahead of time. "It will pinch for a second, then it's over" works better than a surprise.
- Let little ones hold a favorite toy, or sit on your lap.
- Go first if you're getting one too.
- Plan a small reward afterward, like a trip to the park.
